Work with Jo

You may already know an enormous amount about your health.

You’ve researched, tried things, spoken to different people and perhaps collected several different explanations for what might be going on.

Your symptoms may have changed along the way, and after a while it can become difficult to remember what happened when, what seemed to help and where the most useful questions are now.

Sometimes it helps to work through all of that with somebody who is comfortable with the science, understands the chronic-illness world and knows what it feels like to desperately want an answer.

That’s where I come in.

How I work

My background is in science research, publishing and communication. I’m also a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, and my family spent years navigating complex chronic illness.

I bring all of that into our conversations.

We might unpick your symptom history and look at what changed when.

We might look at a treatment, supplement, test or protocol you’ve come across and talk through what it is trying to do, the reasoning behind it and how strong the evidence is.

We might look at whether the everyday foundations that support health are being covered as well as is realistically possible for you – without pretending they caused your illness or that they are a cure.

We might identify information that is still missing, questions for your healthcare team or something worth investigating further.

And we might look at the sheer amount of time, money and energy going into different parts of trying to get better.

I don’t diagnose or prescribe.

But I can research, explain, question, help you spot useful patterns in your own history and help you work out where to focus next.

Sometimes you don’t need another opinion.

You need help making sense of the ones you already have.

A note from Jo

People often arrive after doing an extraordinary amount of homework.

They’ve read research, listened to podcasts, compared practitioners, tried different approaches and learnt far more about health than they ever expected to.

I understand why. I did it too.

And some of what we found genuinely helped our son.

I’m not interested in telling people to stop looking.

What I am interested in is helping you sort useful information from noise, understand what you’re looking at and work out which questions are worth pursuing next.

The 'What Next?' Session

A 60-minute session for when you’ve researched, tried and considered so much that you need help working out where to focus next.

You don’t need to arrive with everything neatly organised.

Bring the questions that keep coming back, symptoms you’re struggling to make sense of, treatments or supplements you’re considering, things you’ve already tried, information you’ve been given and anything else that feels important.

We’ll start with what you most want help understanding or working out.

From there, we might piece together your symptom timeline, look at what changed alongside what, unpack the thinking behind an approach you’ve come across, look at evidence or general health information together, identify gaps that need proper medical input, or consider whether there are sensible health foundations that need more support.

We’ll also look at what all of this is asking of you in time, money and energy.

And because getting better is not the only thing that matters, we can talk about what you want to keep or bring back into your life while you’re still working on your health.

You may leave with something you want to investigate further. A better question for an appointment. A clearer understanding of what your symptoms have been doing over time. Something useful you want to keep doing. Something you want to review. Or something that simply doesn’t need another decision today.

There isn’t a predetermined answer.

The aim is to leave with a better understanding of where you are, what is worth focusing on and some practical direction for what comes next.

You'll leave with:

A clearer picture of your symptoms, what has changed and what you’re currently trying to understand

Plain-English answers to your questions, and explanations of relevant general health ideas or approaches we’ve discussed

A better sense of what you know and where there are still gaps

Useful questions to take to your healthcare team where appropriate

A clearer view of where your time, money and energy are going

A small number of practical next steps

This is likely to be a good fit if:

  • your symptoms and health history have become difficult to make sense of
  • you’ve researched a great deal but still don’t know what to believe
  • different practitioners or sources have given you different explanations
  • you’ve tried several treatments, supplements or approaches and aren’t sure what has made a difference
  • you want to understand the reasoning and evidence behind something you’re considering
  • you’re spending a surprising amount of time, money or energy trying to get better
  • you still want answers, but you’d also like more of your life to be about something other than illness

Why people choose to work with me?

My background is a slightly unusual mix.

I studied plant biology and spent years working in science research, publishing and communication. That taught me how to find reliable information, question claims and explain complicated ideas clearly.

Later, I trained as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, giving me a deeper understanding of many of the approaches people encounter in chronic illness and skills for helping somebody apply information without simply telling them what to do.

And then there is the part no qualification could teach me: years spent trying to help my own son through complex chronic illness.

Some of the things we learnt and applied genuinely helped him, and he eventually became well again.

That gives me hope. It doesn’t make me assume that somebody else will follow the same path.

I bring together research, critical thinking, plain-English explanation, lived experience, curiosity and careful listening.

Good health information matters.

So does knowing how to make sense of it.
